Starts with draped pants...

Happy weekend! And may I add, "long time no see!". This summer has been surprisingly busy. While the upside is that there has been a great balance of work and play to keep things interesting, the downside is that time quickly passed by before I realized how long ago my last post was.

Tonight, some dear friends joined my hubby and me for dinner in Toronto's Distillery District. If you've never been, this is definitely one of my favourite places to visit in the summer. And if you're searching for a new restaurant to try, I highly recommend Cluny (their veal meatball and salmon tartar are heavenly).

For a casual day-to-night outfit that suited both the heat of the afternoon and the breeziness of the evening, I opted for a pair of comfortable draped pants in crepe material. The thicker fabric give these pants more structure, and less of a pyjama look in my opinion.

Because the pants are voluminous, I opted to keep the pairing simple and streamlined. A long necklace and racer-back silk tank helped ensure the look didn't overwhelm my petite frame. To complement the overall softness of the ensemble, I carried a structured handbag.

The tank and subtle silver accessories were complemented by a metallic pop from the sandals.

Hope you're having a great summer so far!

Starts with a green plaid shirt...

Happy Wednesday! Continuing to indulge by current obsession with plaid I recently picked up this boyfriend plaid shirt to add to my "business casual" rotation.

One of the perks of working in an environment that isn't overly formal is the freedom to experiment a bit more with textures and patterns. This crinkle boy shirt is made work-appropriate by layering a fitted blazer on top. This is paired with skinny jeans (not jeggings) and a statement belt. The stack-heel ankle boot is a casual alternative to the classic pump, providing height while still being comfortable.

Admittedly, leaving a a formal workplace where shift dresses and dress pants were go-to staples took a bit of getting used to. But once I figured out the balance of looking (and feeling) too dressed-down and being overly dressed-up -- business casual became quite fun. The best part is that items previously reserved for the weekend could be re-styled to be work-appropriate for the week. Imagine the possibilities!

Hope you're having a great week!

Starts with a floral tank...

The warmer weather of late has been the perfect segue into springtime florals.

Paired with flowy silk cargo shorts and a bag in a pop-out hue, this was the perfect ensemble for an afternoon stroll through the park with the hubby.

Have a great weekend!

Starts with a blue patterned blouse...

This top was purchased years ago for a friend's birthday party, and this weekend while looking for something to wear to another friend's baby shower, I found this tucked away. Styled with a shiny statement necklace for contrast, metallic belt to add shape, and fitted blazer for warmth, this old piece was reinvented and ready for another party.

A purple bag was added to provide additional pop while neutral shoes were used to anchor the ensemble without being too overwhelming.

Starts with a little black dress...

The Little Black Dress. It's the ubiquitous staple on every "Wardrobe Essentials" list and it never never goes out of style. I purchased this strapless dress from Club Monaco thirteen years ago. It has clean lines and almost no embellishment at all, save for the satin tuxedo stripe down the side. The simplicity of this dress provides a neutral palette for dressing-up and dressing-down and it has gone from high school semi-formal (you read that right!), to cruise ship formal, to multiple weddings, and most recently,to my company holiday party. Even though its zipper finally broke a few weeks ago, I caved and had it fixed - I just can't let this go!

Starts with a graphic print sweater...

Happy Monday! This whimsical sweater takes the term "leopard print" to a whole different level. As a big fan of animal prints, how could I resist the print of literally, an animal?

Starts with tangerine accessories...

Fall's ode to tangerine is either a blessing or a curse depending on your comfort with bright colours. For colour-phobes (like me), it's a good push to try something new. That's not to say you have to go all out at the gate - here are a few ways to incorporate tangerine (or as I like to call it, "electric persimmon") into your ensemble.

Novice
Starting small with accessories in this stand-out hue is a good, albeit more conservative approach to incorporating colour.

For the truly faint of heart, a tangerine bangle is a good start:

Intermediate

Ready for more? A tangerine scarf is the perfect way to elevate an otherwise neutral ensemble.

Colour Pro

Finally, a tangerine cardigan paired with golds and browns will make any Fall day seem sunny. Because of the cardigan's stand-out colour, I've opted to keep accessories simple to let the colour really speak for itself.

Starts with an Autumn green blouse...

I'm absolutely loving all the wonderful jewel tones this Fall. Of these colours, green has never really played a part in my wardrobe. However, this sheer blouse in teal green (purchased at 30% off at FNO in Las Vegas no less!) has changed my mind.

I'm especially loving the details like the vents in the back and the pleating, which creates a nice long look.

Starts with black cropped pants...

It's official. I'm obsessed with cropped pants. Come Fall, I don't know how I can go back to my wider-legged dress pants. I love how cropped pants look so effortlessly chic while providing a great way to show off my shoes.

Cropped pants, Fall Fashion

It's a bit tricky for a slightly shorter person like me. I have to be careful that the pants aren't too long (otherwise it adds bulk to the legs) and careful that it's not too short (otherwise it looks like I'm wearing capri pants). My preference is just above the ankle.

 Louboutin

Here, I've paired my pants with a feminine checked top and a long statement necklace to elongate the torso.

We're coming into the long weekend, and I'm looking forward to spending some time outside - how are you spending the last days of summer?

Starts with summer brights and mixed patterns...

There's nothing quite like long weekends in the summer. This lovely purple bag was a recent purchase during a business trip and quick stop into Nordstrom. I'm loving how it brings out the flowers in the patterned shorts.

These snake-print pointed flats keep the look from being too casual (and my first attempt at mixing patterns!)

Hope however you spent it, you had a lovely weekend as well!
